Answer engine optimization

Ten blue links becameone answer.

Your buyer stopped scrolling a results page. They asked an assistant, got one recommendation, and moved on. AEO is the work of being that recommendation.

Definition

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of making a business the source an AI assistant cites when it answers a buying question. Where SEO competes for a ranked link on a results page, AEO competes to be quoted inside a generated answer, where there is usually one visible recommendation instead of ten.

  • Question fanout
  • Liftable claims
  • Tracked citations
How an answer gets built

Four steps happen before your name comes up.

You can't optimize for a process you can't see. Here's the one running every time a buyer asks an assistant about your category.

01

The question gets expanded

You ask one question. The model quietly turns it into a fan of related queries, because a single phrasing is a thin basis for an answer. Most businesses never see the twenty questions their buyer actually triggered.

02

Sources get retrieved

Each of those queries pulls documents from a search index, a crawl, or the model's own memory. If your page is not retrievable, parseable, and current, it never enters the room.

03

Claims get grounded

The model looks for a specific, attributable statement it can stand behind. Vague positioning copy gets skipped. Named prices, named processes, named constraints get quoted.

04

One answer gets assembled

Two or three sources survive into the final paragraph. That's the whole game. Position eight on a results page still gets a click. Source eight in a fanout gets nothing.

The playbook

Six things that move citations.

None of this is exotic. It's just rarely done in order, and almost never measured after it ships.

01

Map the fanout, not the keyword

Start from the buying question and enumerate the sub-questions it spawns: pricing, comparisons, timelines, objections, who it's wrong for. That list is your content plan. If you're still planning off search volume alone, you're planning for the wrong surface.

02

Answer in the first sentence

Put the direct answer in the opening line of the section, then support it. Models lift the top of a section far more often than the bottom of one. A page that builds suspense for four paragraphs is a page that never gets quoted.

03

Make claims specific enough to cite

"Fast onboarding" is unciteable. "Live in fourteen days, one strategist and one engineer assigned" is citeable. Specificity is not a copywriting preference here, it's the retrieval mechanism.

04

Ship structured data that matches the page

Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article, BreadcrumbList. Schema won't rescue thin copy, but mismatched or missing schema will quietly disqualify good copy from being parsed with confidence.

05

Fix the machine plumbing

Server-rendered HTML, crawlable navigation, fast first paint, clean canonicals, an accurate sitemap, and explicit allow rules for AI crawlers in robots.txt. Assistants don't run your JavaScript out of goodwill.

06

Instrument it or you're guessing

Run the same prompt set on a schedule across the assistants your buyers use, record who got cited, and watch the trend. Without a tracked prompt set, AEO is a vibe. With one, it's a number you can move.

Run these in order. Technical plumbing first, then content, then instrumentation. Content shipped onto a site an assistant can't parse is content you paid for twice.

Where teams get it wrong

The habits that worked on a results page.

The unit of work

Search habit

A keyword and a page that targets it.

Answer engine reality

A buying question and every sub-question it fans out into.

What winning looks like

Search habit

A ranked position on a results page.

Answer engine reality

Your name inside the generated answer, with a link back.

How long the tail is

Search habit

Ten blue links, so position five still earns clicks.

Answer engine reality

Two or three cited sources. Fourth place is invisible.

What copy has to do

Search habit

Hold attention and rank.

Answer engine reality

Be liftable. Short, specific, attributable claims near the top.

How you measure it

Search habit

Rank tracking and sessions.

Answer engine reality

Citation rate across a fixed prompt set, tracked over time.

How fast it decays

Search habit

Slowly. A ranked page can coast for months.

Answer engine reality

Fast. Models refresh, competitors publish, and answers get rewritten.

How we run it

We built the software, then we operate it for you.

Cognos is our AEO platform. You don't get a login and a learning curve, you get a named team that runs it: technical rules applied continuously, content published on a monthly cadence, and a prompt set re-run so you can see what changed.

What a month looks like
  • Technical optimization applied and re-checked across the site.
  • AEO-written articles published against the fanout, not the keyword.
  • Business profile posts and releases that give assistants corroborating sources.
  • Your prompt set re-run, with citations logged and reported in plain English.
Questions we get

Straight answers about AEO.

What is answer engine optimization in one sentence?

It's the work of becoming the source an AI assistant quotes when someone asks a question your business should be the answer to.

Is AEO just SEO with a new name?

No, though they share plumbing. Both need crawlable, fast, well-structured pages. They diverge on the unit of work and on what winning means: SEO wants a ranked link, AEO wants a citation inside a single generated answer where there's no page two to fall back on.

Do I have to choose between AEO and SEO?

No. Do the technical work once and it serves both. The split shows up in content strategy: SEO plans around search volume, AEO plans around the questions a buyer actually asks and the sub-questions those spawn.

How do I know whether AI assistants mention my business today?

Pick twenty questions a real buyer would ask, run them across the assistants your market uses, and write down who got named. Do it again next month. That baseline is the cheapest useful thing in this whole discipline, and most businesses have never done it.

How long does AEO take to show up?

Technical fixes and structured data can land in days. Citations move on the same clock as content and crawl cycles, so plan on the first movement inside 60 to 90 days and real compounding after that. Anyone promising next-week citations is selling something.

Does schema markup make an AI cite me?

By itself, no. Schema helps a machine parse what's already on the page with confidence. If the page has nothing specific to say, perfect markup describes nothing perfectly.

What does AEO cost?

Our programs start at $1,500 a month plus a one-time $1,000 setup, and scale with how much content and technical work the market demands. Full breakdown is on the pricing page.

Find out what the assistants say about you.

We'll run a real prompt set for your category and show you who's getting cited today. If it's already you, we'll tell you that too.
